TELEGRAM BAN: Telegram has previously come under fire for facilitating the spread of misinformation and illegal activities.The Indian government’s investigation is being conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The authorities are particularly interested in how Telegram has been used for illegal activities like extortion and gambling. While a ban is not ruled out, the final decision will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

The Indian government too is reported to have launched an investigation into the platform, with the potential for a ban depending on the findings.Telegram messaging apps may be in for more trouble. According to a report in Moneycontrol, the popular messaging app is facing increasing scrutiny from the Indian government over its alleged role in facilitating criminal activities such as extortion and gambling.

According to the report, “The government is investigating Telegram over its alleged misuse in criminal activities such as extortion and gambling, a government official said, adding the messaging app could even be banned depending on the probe’s findings.”
This comes just a day after Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in France.

According to reports, France’s OFMIN, an office tasked with preventing violence against minors, had issued an arrest warrant for Telegram CEO in a preliminary investigation into alleged offences including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organised crime and promotion of terrorism. French authorities have reported concerns about Telegram app’s moderation policies and its alleged failure to prevent criminal activity

Telegram’s ‘role’ in UGC-NEET paper leak

The platform was recently implicated in the UGC-NEET controversy, where the medical entrance exam paper was leaked and widely shared on Telegram. Telegram app is staring at a potential ban in India over alleged role in criminal activities amid its CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest in Paris over allegations that his app was used for child pornography, money laundering and drug trafficking.The French authorities are probing Durov for failing to address criminal activities on the app and the lack of moderators on the platform.

Just one day after Durov’s arrest, India’s government said it was investigating Telegram over its alleged role in several criminal activities and would consider a ban pending the probe. The country has seen the app leak several exam papers and spread child pornography, stock price manipulation, and extortion.

The app has been allegedly linked to criminal cases related to circulation of leaked exam papers and stock market manipulation in India. In April 2023, Sebi imposed Rs 5.68 crore on three Telegram channels and barred six people from the securities market.In June 2023, the UGC NET exam was cancelled after question paper was leaked on Telegram. However, in connection with the NEET UG exam paper leak, the National Testing Agency told the Supreme Court in July that the video showing a photo of the paper leaked on Telegram was fake.

The IT ministry has asked the Home Affairs ministry to check on complaints pending against Telegram and sought update on what actions can be taken, reported PTI citing sources.The basic question here is are there any complaints, is there similar situation in India, and what is the status, and what action is required,” according to sources quoted by the news agency.

The Centre has launched an extortion and gambling investigation into the company and is looking into Telegram’s P2P communications, reported Moneycontrol.
